O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree! ✶

✶ What’s in a tree? ✶

As I sit here on this rainy, cold, 1st day of December, I stare blankly out the window trying to fester up some ideas & inspiration for my next blog. I know written word & creative ideas don't always come about when you want them to, so I am patient. My eyes get tired of looking straight so I start to survey the room & suddenly my eyes land where our Christmas tree lay (our 1st Christmas tree we decorated together as a married couple, in fact!). I start to think & meditate over traditions, Christmas, & how many of us (especially of this generation) have no idea what Christmas really is at the core, where it comes from, who it is inspired by, who it is to be celebrated for?! It saddens me to think that for some, even those who may even know the truth, that it has by default turned into a holiday that is nothing more than going through the motions of tradition! Because I mean, “its just what we’ve always done,” right?! We’re so consumed with being consumers, with worrying about buying gifts, & better yet receiving gifts, that we have forgotten. Our hearts have forgotten.

This year! this month! I’m looking at this Christmas through a fresh perspective. That kind of fresh that fills a home, like a LIVE evergreen tree that enters in a space for the first time, ready to nestle in for the season! MMM…pine never smelled so good, baby!

Christmas: a royal celebration. ✶

In the Bible (in both Matthew & Luke) so the story (or His-story) goes:

Mary & Joseph traveled for many days by donkey from Nazareth to Bethlehem (yes, donkeys move at their own pace! I couldn’t imagine what that was like!). When they arrived in Bethlehem, they were told there were no rooms available for them to stay in. Seeing that Mary was due to give birth any moment, they settled in an open stable; & in that very stable- baby JESUS, the savior to the world, the messiah was born! They wrapped him up & placed him in a manger. A star that shone above the stable where Jesus was born, was the very thing that led the wise men to him ✶. The wise men brought Jesus stunning gifts & praised Him! What a beautiful, humble & most precious birth. Thus, giving us Christmas: a season to celebrate Christ & his life, which brought love, salvation & freedom to us in this world!

(P.S. : I wonder if “Christmas” is a Spanish word? “Mas” = more, which gives us… more Christ!…Maybe not, but it works right! ☺︎)

✶ “O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!” ✶

As I stared at our Christmas tree, I began to analyze & take note of its characteristics. From it’s design to it’s decor…& from it drew many parallels to Christ himself & what a life with him in it looks like!

With it’s main central base, to it’s sturdy trunk, this tree is made to support many branches. Like most branches, they do not appear to grow in only one direction, but they are angled & extend out in every which way ⇠⇡⇣⇢. There are so many intricacies in life, to who Jesus is, to who you are, & to where he will lead you. As he says in John 15:5,  “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me & I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

In order for a tree to stand upright ⇧, a proper base is need to ensure the tree will remain unwavering as it lives in the center of your living room. If you are taking on the task of hosting a real tree, you know that watering your tree weekly is needed to keep your tree fed, perky, alive. Having Jesus at the center (at the base) of your life is key to living grounded, to standing tall, to living an unwaveringly audacious life. Water is a sustaining & necessary source for us as humans, but the living water of Jesus?! Boy, that is SOMETHIN’! “…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” ☔︎ (John 4:14)

The prettiest thing about a Christmas tree (I think) is when you plug it in & see those lights SHINE! Many common tree toppers include stars or angels, & whether lit up or not, are symbolic of the star in the sky over the stable & the angels that came to speak to them that very night! Jesus is “the way, the truth, & the life” (& the light!)! (John 14:16) You are called to be that too! Whoo-hoo!

Pine trees, mean pine needles. Yes, if you have a real tree you’ll find yourself sweeping up those little boogers everyday! Without the pine needles, there would be no green, there would be no real signs of LIFE! Jesus is life, yo. ✌︎

Pine cones grow on pine trees & when they fall to the ground they act as seeds which when buried in the ground, spruce & produce NEW trees! How cool?! God is always pruning the old to make way for the new. Rebirth of new things is a beautiful thing & it’s awesome to know we’ll always be growing throughout seasons of life- both the naughty & the nice.

The day after Thanksgiving is when we started our Christmas tree festivities, which included buying & adding ornaments to make it look all sparkly & cute (I’m sure my husband would agree!). If you think about it, we put so much time & effort into decorating, & we do it so we can sit back & admire how stunning our tree looks. God is the true one to be admired, for all he has done & all that he continues to do. True royalty. (& he admires you on the daily too, my dear!)

Just like each of us, every Christmas tree has its own personality- its own SWAG, per se. Different heights, color themes, designs, & ornaments. Trees not only have personality, they are personal. Many people collect ornaments that are personalized from special events such as: “our 1st Christmas,” or even hang embarrassing photos of you & Santa when you were 13 years old (thanks mom!). A relationship with Jesus is personal, it’s your own, it’s what you make of it, it’s genuine, it’s unique. He for sure knows who you are & is delighted in ALL that you are!

Trees. Christmas trees. How do they make you feel? Do they make you all warm & fuzzy inside when you look at them? Do they bring you peace, joy, love? Probably all the feels. Guess what, so does Jesus! Jesus is there for you no matter what you are feeling. He meets you right where you are at & wants to bring you all the goodness the world could never fulfill.

THIS CHRISTMAS ☞ let’s not just decorate the house, put up the tree, drink hot cocoa, make ginger bread houses, & give gifts…let’s do these things with the right HEART ♥︎ by knowing the meaning & purpose behind it all!

“O come let us adore him!”
